Shoe odor is an issue for many people, for both men and women of all ages. Shoes Odor can make you feel embarrassing when you need to remove your shoes in public, as after removing the shoes the unpleasant sharp smell or odor coming out of the shoes is unbearable, but if you rectify how your shoes are stinking than you can easily get rid of the smell.
Cause of foot odor
Feet smell for two reasons: you wear shoes and your feet sweat. The interaction between your perspiration and the bacteria that thrive in your shoes and socks generates the odor. Therefore, any attempt to reduce foot odor has to address both your sweating and your footwear.
Smelly feet can also be caused by an inherited condition called hyperhidrosis, or excessive sweating, which primarily affects men. Stress, some medications, fluid intake and hormonal changes also can increase the amount of perspiration your body produces.
Here are some of the ways you can try to keep your shoes from stinking
1. Use Baking Soda
– You can use a coffee filter and baking soda to get rid of shoe odor. Fill your coffee filter with some baking soda and toss the baking soda inside.
– Sprinkle some baking soda (half a teaspoon in each shoe is fine) and let them sit overnight. The baking soda will help mask odor and absorb remaining moisture. Remove the baking soda from the shoes before wearing them.
2. Use baby powder
– Sprinkle a little baby powder into your shoes each time you wear them. It helps to absorb the odor.
3. Lemon Juice
– Dampen a paper towel with lemon juice and put baking soda on top of it. Ball it up and put it in shoe over night. You can also boil black tea and dip cotton balls in it then put in shoe.
4. Choose the right socks
– Wear the kind made from natural fibers (cotton, wool, silk, rayon) or high-tech synthetic fibers like wicking polyester. I can attest that when I stopped wearing nylon stockings to work every day, my feet became much healthier and happier.
5. Use Newspaper
– Take newspaper pages and crumple them to the point they fit inside the shoes. Leave them overnight, the next day, toss those pages and replace with fresh ones. Repeat as needed.
– The chemical mixture produced by the paper and the ink on the newspaper pages will absorb any odor. It works in any closed space where we need to eliminate odors: the car trunk, kitchen bowls, pots, cabinets,….etc.
6. Rubbing alcohol
– Pour or spray just enough rubbing alcohol into your shoes to coat the insides and then place them on their sides in a well ventilated (but unpopulated) area. The rubbing alcohol will kill the bacteria and evaporates quickly. Afterwards, coat the insides with a little baking soda to soak up any remaining odor or moisture.
7. Other Tips:
– Choose the right shoes that fit your feet.
– Wear that have breathable fabrics. Some of the breathable fabrics: Cotton – Linen – Leather – Hemp.
– Never wear the same pair of shoes two or more days in a row if you can avoid it. Shoes need to air out and dry out between wearings. So, give your shoes a break, make sure you have alternate shoes.
– Personal hygiene – make sure you always wash your feet with antibacterial soap, wearing clean and well-ventilated socks, and allowing shoes to completely dry before wearing them again can all help decrease bacteria population.
